Cello and piano
Duration: ca. 4:00
Beginning with a mysterious, ethereal sound, hinting at the first tendrils of smoke, unfolding as a match strikes repeatedly, this piece smolders quietly for a few seconds before taking off like a shot as the flames ignite in the running ostinati that twists and turns, sometimes in sync and sometimes fighting a beat of four against three. The tempo slows, and the sounds become spacious, inviting contemplation of the rising smoke above the flames, drifting ever upward until the thrill of the running flames returns.
This piece may be performed alone or as the first piece in a full set on nature followed by the icy sounds of Walk Carefully and concluding with a downpour with One Hundred Percent Chance of Rain.
