This song was inspired by and written for graduating seniors, who shared their mixed emotions on the milestone of leaving the beauty and familiarity of their choir and their younger selves. The shared feeling of anticipation brought forth feelings of excitement, nostalgia, curiosity, worry, and wonder. Reflecting this time of life and these feelings, the piano begins with an imitation of a clock ticking to note the passing of time, although this steady beat evolves into the sound of a heartbeat later on. Ambiguity of the opening key center reflects the unknown ahead, and anticipation is built into melodic phrases with musical anticipations, the early arrivals of notes belonging to the next chord. Despite all this uncertainty, there is also joy and playfulness, soaring harmonies, and shared appreciation for the feeling of being at home and very much among friends who share a bond and a love of music and singing.
